An “angel maker” is a French euphemism for a person who performs abortions. Many of my titles come to me during my insomnia and I had no idea what this meant until I looked it up. The painting is about the attempt to rescue something that is beautiful and in jeopardy of peril.
A hierophant is an interpreter of sacred mysteries and arcane principles. Here is my self-portrait as I am at home. I paint in a green, velvet 50’s housecoat that is rather regal. After a long struggle, I finally had a series of successes that made me feel confident, that is to say: confident in my form, my station, and my living. My cat, Yum Yum, is my only constant companion. Also, this portrait commemorated the end of my habit of smoking cigarettes… mostly.
Inspired by the troubled life of Charlotte Perkins, the author of the “The Yellow Wallpaper,” this painting explores the loss of identity and potentialm madness from the failure of a relationship and the discord of marriage.
